A week in a villa on Saint-Barthélemy is one of the great Caribbean luxuries. The views, the privacy and the pace of the island all invite you to stay in. A private chef turns that villa into the best table on the island: dinner served on your terrace, breakfast timed to your morning swim, and a kitchen that runs without you ever thinking about it.

Here is how to book one well, and what to expect once the chef arrives.

Book earlier than you think

St Barths is small, and its high season is short and intense. From mid-December to April, the best villas, cars and tables are reserved months in advance, and experienced private chefs are no exception. For the festive weeks around Christmas and New Year, or the regatta weeks in March and April, booking six to twelve months ahead is normal.

Outside those peaks there is more flexibility. Even so, a few weeks' notice gives your chef time to plan menus, order specialty ingredients and build the stay around you.

Share the details that matter

The best stays begin with a good brief. Before your arrival, your chef will want to know:

  • Who is at the table. Number of guests, children, and any guests joining for single evenings.
  • Allergies and dietary needs. Medical allergies, intolerances, and preferences such as vegetarian, pescatarian or kosher-style.
  • The rhythm of your days. Early breakfasts or late brunches, lunch on the boat or at the beach, dinner at home every night or a few evenings out.
  • Favourite flavours, and pet hates. A dish you loved last trip, a cuisine you crave, an ingredient nobody should see on the plate.
  • Special occasions. Birthdays, anniversaries, a celebration dinner that deserves its own menu.

The more your chef knows, the less you will need to say once you are on the island.

Choose the right level of service

Private chef service in St Barths can be shaped around your stay. Some guests want every meal handled, from morning pastries to late-night snacks. Others want a few memorable dinners and the freedom to explore the island's restaurants on other nights.

The usual formats are:

  • Full-time service for the whole stay, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Dinner service each evening, with lighter meals left ready for the day.
  • Single events, such as a birthday dinner, a sunset cocktail party or a beach lunch.

Tell us what you have in mind and we will match you with a chef whose style and availability fit.

Understand how provisioning works

Most of what reaches a table in St Barths has travelled: the island has little farmland, and much of its produce arrives by sea and air from mainland France, Guadeloupe and neighbouring islands. Fresh fish, when the catch allows, is landed locally.

A good chef knows which days the freshest deliveries arrive, which suppliers to trust and how to plan a menu around what is genuinely at its best. Groceries are billed separately from the chef's fee. Your chef buys everything in advance, and the grocery cost is reimbursed on your final invoice, plus a small handling fee, detailed in your quote.

What a day of service looks like

Your chef arrives before you wake to prepare breakfast, then shops, preps and cooks through the day while you enjoy the island. Dinner is served when you want it, where you want it: on the terrace, by the pool or as a casual spread in the kitchen.

The kitchen is left spotless after every service. That is part of the job, not an extra.

Why vetting matters

Anyone can call themselves a private chef. The difference shows on the plate, and in how a chef behaves inside a private home. Discretion, punctuality and calm under pressure matter as much as technique.

At Chef's Barth, every chef is personally vetted by our founder, Luigi Fumarola, who spent more than 20 years in professional kitchens, including Michelin-starred restaurants, and more than a decade as head chef aboard superyachts. We only place chefs we would trust in our own home.
